Module 2

News Blog: The Huffington Post

The Huffington Post is strictly a news blog that was established by Arianna Huffinton and Kenneth Leerer as a news website that features various news sources and columnists. It covers a wide range of subject such as politics, media, business, and entertaiment. It allows journalists to post articles as blogs while allowing the readers to comment on each of the articles. This provides a great deal of feedback to the The Huffington Post. Much of the writing style of the articles is very opinionated and contains bias. This somewhat hurts the credibility of the news because the journalists do not remain objective on the subjects they are reporting.

Traditional News Website: Los Angeles Times

Los Angeles Times is a traditional online news source that features a more traditional format of reporting that is very similar to print newspaper. It also covers a wide range of subjects such as world, business, sports, and entertainment. Unlike The Huffington Post, the Los Angeles Times does not allow comments to be posted on it's news articles. This does not allow feedback and does not allow the reader to interact and respond. The writing style of the articles is very traditional and often remains as objective as possilbe. This in turn gives it more credibility because the writing of the journailist is not evident in the majority of the articles.

I feel that blogging has the potential to support this type of journalism just as well as digital print media. As long as the journalists that write for these news blog sites continue to act as responsible journalists and ensure that what they are reporting is the truth.

What makes a news blog good are responsible journalists and the ability for the reader to send feedback via comments. This allows news blogs to be more interactive and allow a more two-way discussion between the reporter and reader. What makes a good online newspaper is the more traditional form of reporting and a wider range of topics covered. A good online newspaper should cover all aspects of the local area that they are reporting to and should be specific to that area.

Although I feel both have varying levels of credibility, ultimately I consider online newspapers to be more credible due to the objective and unbiased style of writing.

The research material that I gathered somewhat supports my thesis and on a scale of 1-5 of how well it supported it I would rate it at about a 4. In my thesis I originally stated that blogging has significantly impacted the print journalism. This research material supports that because it demonstrates that a news blog can report on the same subjects as a traditional news website and does so in an effective way. Although the credibility of news blogs is still questionable like I stated in my thesis, I still believe they have had a significant impact on print journalism, for better or worse.

For now my original thesis remains unchanged.
